24. RETURN TO DANVILLE

Barbara and I had been looking for a house in Danville for quite some time in preparation for our future retirement there. With the help of Jean, Barbara’s sister, we found one on Vine Circle in Green Acres. The owner had died there and left it to two girls that grew up next door to him. I found them and made them an offer, which after some negotiations upwards, they accepted. I used money that was earned on the stock market to pay cash for it. Of course, it needed a major overhaul. We proceeded to turn the carport into a garage and added another garage on to it. We also completely remodeled the basement, put in drop ceilings and added a bath. We were well on the way to perfecting our retirement home. We spent a total of $35,000 on the modifications, but it was well worth it and we were able to use the pay-as-you-go plan, which for the first time in our lives gave us a home that was free of any liens or liabilities. That was truly a great feeling; one that we had looked forward to for a long time.
